I’ve been a professional coach for over 10 years and I’ve earned a good living. So I feel qualified to comment on this subject.
There are four essentials in my book.
First, you must have a deep-seated need to be of service to other people. This is the on-going motor or motivator that drives you on week in and week out. I would tend to believe that this is something you’re born with.
Second, you need the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. These communication skills can be sharpened up. NLP is a tremendous help with inter-personal communication.
Third, you need to be able to work through your client’s “blockages”. By that I mean the issues that are getting in their way and stopping them getting on with having good and happy lives. Life coach training is probably very useful here. But I tend to believe that experience of many different areas of life is of equal, if not more importance.
This fourth area is the main area in which most aspiring life coaches come unstuck... you need to be able to build a portfolio of cash-paying clients.

Well, I’ll tell you… I think the most important skill I possess is the ability to generate a solid base of cash-paying customers.
If you want to know how to become a life coach I would say you need to give serious consideration to how you’re going to get clients.
It is only when you have clients that you can practice your life coaching skills. And, if you have a modicum of intelligence, the more you practice the better you’ll get.
The most common blunder aspiring coaches make is to assume that if they become good coaches then clients will just show up. Wrong. It just does NOT happen like that.
Understand this – if you want to succeed as a life coach, you’ve got to become good at marketing. Ask any successful coach.
