    Your Leadership Style
If you want to succeed as a leader, you need to be comfortable with moving around the spectrum of leadership styles. Sticking with just one style means that you become predictable and hence, as a leader, dispensable. It also means that your style of leading may not fit the needs of the team or task. So, learn what the 4 leadership styles are and develop yourself to become skilled in each of them.1. The Directive Style. The directive leadership style is the style most people equate with “strong” leadership. When people say they want more leadership, they usually mean they want more direction. In military terms, this is leading from the front or by example. Although the directive, -- or command-and-tell

I had Lisa fight her feelings of depression and defeat by making her job search become her actual job. Once she stopped procrastinating and focused her job search, she found a good job, though not in her field of Journalism. When she wasn’t working, Lisa spent her time networking and was able to sell herself better. Lisa soon landed a good position writing for a nationally circulated newspaper.

Certainly, no one relishes disappointment, but to shy away from situations that might bring you down is to avoid potentially great opportunities, and this can prevent you from reaching your potential.

Keep a positive attitude, remember your goals, and prepare yourself for the likelihood of a few of life’s curveballs. When you give something a try and it doesn’t work out, square your shoulders, grit your teeth, get busy, and meet discouragement head-on.

Most importantly, don’t give up, because it’s ultimately up to you to find a way out of the quagmire of discouragement.

Depression: Based on a True Story
“Ring, ring.” The crisis operator answers the phone to a woman pleading to let her daughter know that she loves her. The woman spent her day writing letters to friends and loved ones, expressing her thoughts and emotions. From the loaded gun on the table to the rope hanging from the attic, it was a well-thought out plan (Lewis, Pamela, 2003).Have you ever felt life was not worth living? Have you wished you were dead? Have you had any thoughts of taking your own life? It began October of 1998, while my husband and I were on our way home from the grocery store. The cellular phone rings. My husband answers. He then tells the caller that we are on our way there. His tone of voice sounded frightened and
All of us have experienced discouragement in our life at one time or another. For example, during our youth, it might have resulted from missing the first-place prize in an athletic competition, or perhaps it came from not capturing a coveted academic honor.

For many of us these initial brushes with disappointment have faded into the background of time and have gradually been replaced with the happier memories of achievement and success. Even though most of us have tasted victory at some point, life continues to bring disappointments. Therefore, the greatest challenge most of us face is learning to manage, and ultimately master discouragement.

It is impossible to pass through life without ever running over a few potholes along the way, failing to get a promotion, for example. The setback may have seemed disastrous at the time, but it didn’t mean the end of hope for future success, unless you let it. How well you overcome discouragement is largely determined by one thing; attitude.

While you seldom can control the chain of events that result in a significant disappointment, you can control how you approach your situation. Maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity is a time-tested method for overcoming setbacks. Look through the newspaper regularly, read magazine articles about people and read autobiographies, you’ll find examples of individuals triumphing over obstacles, of mind over matter. It’s the stuff heroes and legends are made of.

Another point to remember is that having high levels of self-esteem not only helps you reach your goals but it also helps you overcome disappointment. Let’s say, for example, that one of your biggest goals it to be appointed to a senior management position by the age of 35. You work hard and sacrifice for it. What would the failure to achieve your goal mean?

It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re not qualified or good enough for the job. Perhaps the company is unable to fully utilize your energy and drive. Maybe this is signal that it is time for you to explore new job opportunities that have the potential and the flexibility to match your skills and ambitions.

In a situation like this, one thing is for certain: The more positively and hopefully you approach a difficult and discouraging situation like this, and the more self-confidence you will have, and the faster your recovery from disappointment will be.

The pressures to achieve certain standards in regard to our work, our relationships, and our life-style can often be overwhelming. In our fast-paced society, discouragement can easily set in if you haven’t attained a certain level of material and social comfort by the time you become an adult.

To avoid this all too common sense of frustration, you need to carefully analyze your priorities to that you make the important choices in your life in accordance with your goals and with what you want most out of life. However, it’s important to understand that you will continue to experience disappointments as you pass through the stages of life.

One of the most important things you can do is to write down your short and long-term goals, so that when things go wrong, you can remind yourself of your original ideals and dreams. Thinking about your future goals is automatically positive and serves as a road map to get your through life’s rough spots.

A positive attitude and high levels of self esteem are essential ingredients in overcoming discouragement, but taking action in difficult situations is just as important. For example, I had a client by the name of Carl in the Western Illinois area who left a secure job as a computer engineer to start his own action-sports outfitter store.

He told me recently that while owning a business has been very rewarding and given him a strong sense of self-control in his life, he is often discouraged because of the long hours he has to put in and the anxiety he experiences when business is slow.

Carl told me that he is able to regain his positive perspective by talking to others in the business and residential community where his store is located. He told me that when business is slow and he feels discouraged, instead of dwelling on the negative he will reevaluate the store and designs new programs to bring people into the store. By focusing on the positive future of his store and taking action he eliminates his discouragement.

Another former client of mine by the name of Lisa lost her job as a writer for a local community newspaper in Northern California. She spent months haphazardly sending our resumes with no positive response and was fading into the dangers of depression.
