There is a large amount of information about focusing on one thing to make your business grow. I fully agree with what they have to say, however, I also fully agree with those that say diversify to grow. It may not be as difficult as you think. In my business, I consult with organizations in a couple of ways, first as an outsourced training department, and second as a professional that helps them see where the gaps in their achievements lie. This may seem like two widely different aspects of consulting but in reality they are very much the same thing. Let me explain.
As an outsourced training solution, I must look at the company as a whole. I must also analyze the current situation and where that organization wants to be in the future. This analysis allows me to determine the best training solutions for any gaps that I have identified in their company. With the analysis, I am able to put together a timely and quality training program. I use the analysis phase as a stand alone product for my consulting that acts without the training solutions. So even though it may look like two different areas, it is not. This way if you are the consultant, you are diverse yet focused.

This small company is still focused on the same thing but have added to their product and service mix to expand their customer base.
Do a quick look at your organization to discover the focus. If you cannot find one, then perhaps having a GAP analysis and then targeted solutions to help you get into focus in order to diversity is in order. Many organizations get out of focus quite easily but going after the low hanging fruit that is way out of their scope. Small business people are often the most guilty. It is OK to have more than one focus, it should just be in separate organizations.
