On December 12, 1997 in Amarillo, Texas a horrible crime was committed and now, nine years later, his family, friends, and even people like me thousands of miles away are left with the memories and the lessons taught by the events that took place on that fateful day.

Brian Deneke was your average teenage boy. He loved music, being with his friends, and even held a job. The only difference between Brian and the other people in his community was the fact that he was a punk. In a community dominated by football and cattle, Brian was different. He had a faded blue Mohawk and to the kids at his school, he was known as “Punch.” This was because he was a human punching bag for all of the football players at school. Eventually, Brian was fed up. He dropped out of school.

On that fateful day, after hanging out with his friends at an Amarillo IHOP, Brian was murdered. Why? The only answer is that he was different. The “whitehats” or jocks as they are commonly known, met him and his friends outside that cold, winter’s night. They had everything: chains, baseball bats, and fists. They had also been drinking. A huge fight occurred in the parking lot across from the IHOP. Brian was knocked down. A white Cadillac ran him over, then proving it wasn’t an accident, backed over him again. The driver was 17 year-old Dustin Camp. A trial followed. The town stood divided. No one knew whose side to be on: the good kid, or the punk. Eventually, Camp got off with only10 years probation and a $10,000 fine. He is currently finishing out the sentence in jail due to a violation of his probation.

Although this event occurred in Amarillo, Texas and nine years ago, there is a huge lesson that people can learn from this. Don’t let that happen to you. If you or someone you know has been threatened by anyone because of being different, contact the appropriate officials. Do it for Brian, but most of all do it for you.
