You know those big Human Resources Policies & Procedures manuals that all big corporations have? The ones govern your code of conduct during your workday? Those rules were made to be broken. That is, if you decide to work for yourself and become an entrepreneur. Otherwise, you'd get fired for breaking the HR rules.

Entrepreneurs don't have rules. They don't have policies and procedures. Rules are for followers and entrepreneurs don't follow. That is one of the perks of entrepreneurship.

Take some of the following common Human Resources policies and pay close attention to the equivalent entrepreneur policies:

    1. Attendance

Corporate Policy: If you cannot report to work as scheduled, you must notify your HR department who will let your manager know. If your need for time off is foreseeable, you must provide as much notice as possible. If your need for time off is not foreseeable, you must provide as much notice as practicable, but in no event less than one (1) hour prior to your normally scheduled starting time.

Entrepreneur Policy: If I want to take the day off for whatever reason whatsoever, I will take it. Working every day of the week is for schmuks!

    2. Break periods

Corporate Policy: Employees may take two scheduled fifteen (15) minute breaks each work day. Breaks will be designated by the supervisor as the daily schedule and situations allow.

Entrepreneur Policy: If I want to take a break every day at eleven to watch The Price Is Right, I will. If I want a break from work to go shopping, I will go shopping. I can catch up on mywork later.

    3. Promotions

Corporate Policy: It is the policy of the company, wherever possible, to fill vacancies with qualified employees from within the company. Promotion to all positions is based on, among other things, individual ability, efficiency, qualifications, performance, good attendance and punctuality, educational background and length of service.

Entrepreneur Policy: I’m the boss. I’m in charge. I don't need or even want a promotion.

    4. Smoking

Corporate Policy: In accordance with law, the Company prohibits smoking in all indoor areas. Smoking is permitted outdoors, on scheduled work breaks, provided that: (1) no more than 3 people are smoking at any given time; (2) someone is covering your duties while you smoke; and (3) all persons present consent to the smoking. Communicating for Profit and Customer Satisfaction
The President of a 200+ store division of a major retailer learned of a serious communication problem and commented that ‘this was to be expected in large organizations’.
