Most computer problems that are software related (and some hardware) can be fixed easily if you know how. These problems assume that at some point, your system was running fine. When people ask me to fix their computer I always start with these steps:
Is it plugged in? - I know, but I've had cases where the power cord was not plugged into the power supply but was plugged into the wall. Also check to make the sure power supply is on (there is a switch on the back of it).
Does the computer have a virus/spyware? - There are a multitude of free scanners. I would suggest Adaware for spyware and Norton for virus scanning. And while you're there, get Zonealarm for a firewall.
Is the computer running slow? - This could be caused by fragmentation of files, corrupted registry entries, or a full hard drive. I would suggest a program like PerfectDisk to clean your system.
Do you get a blue screen of death (BSOD) or other message saying that critical files are missing? - Insert your Windows cd and reboot the computer. Tell it to boot from cd and when you are given the option, hit ‘R' to use recovery console. When you are able, type ‘chkdsk /r', this will repair the installation.

Take out the RAM, blow on the motherboard slots and use an eraser to gently clean the contacts of the RAM (try to remove dust from the whole computer). If this does not work, it could be because your RAM is corrupted. If you have more than one stick of RAM, try installing only one at a time to single out the corrupted stick(s). If none of the sticks work, try re-seating things. Leave one stick of RAM in, but unplug the video card and clean it out and put it back in, unplug the motherboard power connection and clean it out, check all parts you feel confortable messing with except the processor. If this does not fix the problem, try using one stick of RAM at a time to single out a corrupted stick. If none of this works, buy new RAM.
Does your computer randomly shut down or get colored lines and weird shapes on the screen? - This is caused by overheating. The processor overheating could eventually cause the system to immediately turn off. This is a failsafe system built into the processor so that it won't melt itself. Colored lines, shapes or messed up graphics would be caused by your video card overheating, this can also sometimes cause a system crash/hang.
