Every great hero undergoes a Period of Reflection, where his (or her) path (destiny, dharma) becomes clearer. It is the (much shorter) equivalent of wandering through the desert for forty days and nights (common in many religious texts) or the walkabout (an Australian aboriginal term and common in the rites of passage rituals of many cultures).
The Period of Reflection occurs in at least two places of the Hero's Journey.
The first is often in the First Threshold, before the Hero makes the Conscious Decision to leave his Old Self behind. Leaving behind a part of you in not easy.
